Stories
Doris
dorisDoris, a 71 year old woman, was evicted from her Section 8 housing because the landlord was converting it to regular housing. Working with Valley Outreach, Doris found a new Section 8 home in Oak View. Over the course of 18 months Valley Outreach stayed in touch with Doris so when she was recently scheduled for a Section 8 inspection, Valley Outreach and its volunteers rushed in and got the house in order so that Doris would pass her inspection and keep her Section 8 housing.

Jane
Jane came to the Community Assistance Program recently. As the single mother of two, Jane was recently hospitalized for several weeks after suffering domestic violence. While in the hospital, all of Jane’s clothing and possessions were taken. Jane had to go into hiding while the legal system worked through her restraining order and custody issues. Fortunately, because of a caring employer, Jane was able to keep her job. However, Jane wasn’t able to work full time for several months as a result of her injuries and her domestic issues. Jane came to CAP for rental assistance. As we talked with Jane, we came to understand the full extent of her needs. In addition to helping her pay her rent until she could catch up, we gave her a voucher for 2nd HELPings (HELP’s Thrift Store) where she was able to get clothing for herself, her children and to replace many of the household goods that had been taken from her. We also gave her food from the food pantry and helped her to pay her utility bills. Without this assistance she may have lost her housing, her transportation and ultimately, her job.

Caregiver
Oak Tree House has made it possible for me to continue to keep my Mom at home. Without the reprieve I get while she is there I would not have the capacity to continue to care for her on my own-she would have to be in a care facility at this point. I believe the social stimulation my Mom gets by attending Oak Tree House has slowed the progression of her Alzheimer’s Disease

Counselor
My focus with the child has been to validate the frustrations she experiences trying to focus and behave in class as well as to help her normalize the grief and loss she feels due to her adoption and attachment disruptions. In play therapy I have encouraged her to use play and art materials to tell her story. Both teacher and mom report that she seems calmer, more focused in class and able to recover quicker from upsets.
